Post No. 165 Monet and Manet

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC
I'm excited that I finally joined the Met, Friday! :)
Here, we have a photograph of two works of two well known French impressionist painters, Claude Monet and Edouard Manet. I'm no art historian, so I won't discuss the history of the impressionist movement. However, I think it's important to share knowledge, so I've added a wiki link for anyone who wants to educate themselves more on the subject: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impressionism

Post No 159 UFO Sighting in Queens

Queens (Flushing), NY
Actually, these silhouetted structures you see are not UFO's, rather they are the observation towers, which were a part of the 1964/1965 NY World's Fair. Click the link below for more information on the Fair...

Post No. 154 View of Tuscan Countryside?

Nyack, NY
While on a photowalk after the most recent installation of "Snowpocalypse" or "Snowmageddon" (I like to refer to this one as "Snowzilla"), I saw what is to me, an ironic, funny and interesting image. I was drawn to the juxtaposition of the fresh coating of snow against the image of the beautifully arid and warm climate of Tuscany, immortalized in the form of a fresco on the terrace wall of a local restaurant (La Fontana). At times, it's difficult to determine which scene is real and which is the painting...

Post No. 150 One in a Trillion

Nyack, NY
"There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
And I have become
Comfortably numb."

I wooed the soft snow with me to play,
She played and she melted in all her prime;
And the winter called it a dreadful crime."

Post No. 148 Droppin' Some NYC

It's hard to be humble when it's all at your feet
And someday soon, it's gonna leave the street
They say the truth shall set you free
Well you're on parole when you're on N-Y-C

Post No. 146 Devohn Walker- Stylist- NYC style icon

NYC -
I've always wanted to photograph Amsterdam Billiards and Bar in Union Square at night... I love the design of the art deco signage and the way the brilliant red neon illuminates the corner of 4th Ave and E. 11th Street. So, after I took the initial image (top), I decided to get closer for more detailed shots... As I walked towards the hall, I noticed a silhouetted figure in front of the neon red billiards sign (second photo). It was a cool-looking scene that I couldn't pass up on. I stepped closer, and the gentleman turned around. He was dressed immaculately, with a striking and distinctive style...one that I had seen before, but couldn't quite picture when or where... He introduced himself as Devohn Walker. He had a pleasant and relaxed demeanor, which complimented his style perfectly. After we conversed for a few minutes, he agreed to allow me to photograph him, I snapped several more photos, including the last two you see in this post... I have to apologize to Devohn that I cut off some of his shoes in the full-body portrait. (My bad...) We exchanged emails, so I could let him know when I posted these photographs, and I was off on my way. As I walked down towards Houston to meet up with my friend, Rok, I remembered where I had seen Devohn before... in a post of the Sartorialist from October, 2008 (here's the link: http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html ) .
Anyhow...Devohn, I hope you like the pics and be well, my friend.

Post No. 138 Clark W. Griswold's House?

There was a fierce snowstorm in the greater NYC area last night. I was on my way to the Blair Academy (Blairstown, NJ) to watch a prep school basketball tournament, to see the team coached my friend, Jon Stone (The Hun School of Princeton, NJ). Interstate 80 in NJ was treacherous, and the windy, hilly, backwoods, two-lane county roads to Blairstown were practically impassable. It was a white-knuckle drive, to say the least... I passed this home on the way to the game. There weren't any streetlights on this road, so when I rounded the bend where the house stands, the brilliant lights dramatically pierced the dark countryside. It instantly brought to mind the Griswold's house from the movie Christmas Vacation (one of my favorite holiday flicks). Although I had my trusty Nikon with me, I didn't snap a pic at that time... I was in a hurry to get to the game, the snow was coming down too hard, and the shoulder of the road was not plowed, making it impossible for me to stop and pull-over to snap a pic or two. By the time the games were over, the snowstorm had passed and the roads were clear (thank goodness). So, when I saw this house on my way home, you know that I just had to stop and take this pic...
By the way, what's one of your favorite holiday movies?

My good friend Shane's three year old daughter. This photo was taken during a bbq on a cool, rainy, and soggy autumn day. The positive vibe of friends, family, and good food provided plenty of warmth to make the day fun and memorable.

Post No. 127 Nyack Orange

Nyack, NY It's been steamy, hot and humid in the greater NYC area for the last two weeks. Fantastically dramatic thunderstorms, full of brilliant lightning, booming thunder, torrential downpours have become quite frequent in this time, as well. Yesterday was no exception. At about 4pm, the skies darkened and the thunder drums began to pound in the distance. I looked out of my window across the Hudson and observed ominous clouds converging from the north and south, onto Westchester and Tarrytown, NY. The strong gusts of wind violently whipped tree branches and created waves and whitecaps on the river, rocking the sailboats in the local marina. I actually saw a funnel cloud form and quickly dissipate... Then a wall of rain crawled slowly toward my side of the river. The storm lasted for about an hour, then the sun began to peek through the clouds. The sky never completely cleared, but the colors created by the evening sunlight bouncing off the clouds was striking. I went for a stroll with my camera, looking for a rainbow, which I found, but unfortunately, the light wasn't sufficient to get a good snap. But, as they say in photography, as you look at your subject from one direction, turn around and look at the lighting sky from a different point of view (pov), you might be surprised at what you see... The image in the photograph above is what I saw when I turned around... Any thoughts? ~peace & love seanjonesfoto

Post No. 126 Yummm

I made this delicious salad yesterday for lunch. Mesclun greens with tomato, fresh basil, tuna, blueberries, and mango, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette... I love to make these salads! They please four of the five senses: visually stimulating colors and textures; sweet scent; wonderfully varying and distinct tastes; and lovely textures on the tongue... You'll have to make one for yourself and let me know how it turns out. ;)
